The New England Patriots showed the world they have what it takes to win a championship banner when they won Super Bowl XLIX. It goes without saying that the Patriots bring an immense pool of talent to the game for them to even have made it to the Super Bowl in the first place. The fight for the championship banner was not a smooth one for the team but they provided lessons that everyone can take away from their performance during the entire football season.
New England fans know how badly the season started off for the team. In spite of losing their first few games -- including an embarrassing loss to Kansas City at 41-14 -- the team rallied from behind. The media nearly wrote the team off but their coach, Bill Belichick, simply stated they were moving on to the next game. He did not let the team's setbacks define them and the Patriots went on to win the next seven games that followed. Even though the Patriots got off to a weak start, they did not let that stop them from finishing strong.
Who can forget the allegations that some New England Patriots balls were under-inflated during their playoff game against the Indianapolis Colts? The Patriots beat the Colts soundly at 45-7 during that game, securing them a berth in the Super Bowl. In spite of these accusations -- which centered on Belichick as well as star quarterback, Tom Brady -- the team members addressed the particulars and answered questions. Then they moved on, staying focused on their ultimate goal: winning the Super Bowl. The Patriots did not let challenges divert them from their long-term focus.
Coach Belichick's mantra helped fine-tune the vision, drive and expectations within the team. Each team member understood that they are valued and that they needed to do their job in the best way possible while also putting the team first. This mantra highlighted the determination and assets that each team member brings to every game.
There is a reason why the New England Patriots have advanced to the Super Bowl six times in the last 13 years. They have a winning formula that enables them to behave as a cohesive unit while keeping its eye on the prize even when the going get tough.
