Last night the Boston University Terriers won their 30th Beanpot championship at the TD Garden against the Northeastern Huskies. The game was clinched in a thrilling overtime victory in which Charlestown native and Boston Bruins draft pick Matt Grzelcyk scored the winning goal to win the game 4-3. Although this was the 30th Beanpot victory for the B.U. terriers it was the first time B.U. head coach David Quinn was able to bring home the championship banner.
Due to yet another blizzard in Boston the game had to be postponed from February 9th making the lead up to the game even more intense with anticipation. It was a nail biter down to the last second and was the first time that a Beanpot final had been decided in overtime since 2012, when Boston College defeated the Terriers 3-2.
Although last night’s win was an huge win for the Terriers it was a crushing defeat for the Huskies, as it extended their Beanpot drought to 27 years. The last time they had won the tournament was in 1988. The Huskies will have another shot at the Terriers this Friday at the Agganis Arena and Saturday at Northeastern when they finish up the final games of their regular season – however any victory this weekend will be bittersweet after the crushing defeat last night.
Accent Banner is proud to be the creator of Boston University’s custom banners that hang in the rafters of the Agganis Arena. Adding another year to the terriers Beanpot championship banner will be just another chapter in the teams’ great hockey legacy in Boston.
